In 1926, America’s most famous evangelist is a woman, Sister Aimee Semple McPherson, and she’s looking for a way out. Fed up with her own success, she gets swept up in her lover Kenny’s daydreams about Mexico and finds herself on a wild road trip towards the border with butch driver Rey. Part 1920s radio-play, part western, part musical, and an all-around screwball comedy, the film embraces one woman’s legend to validate the power of spectacle and the magic of a good storyteller. Directed by a lesbian couple with an admittedly queer sensibility, Sister Aimee is based on true events…yet mostly made up.
